Poltava Medical Dental University is the leading state higher educational institution in training both physicians and dentists. The Poltava Medical Dental University started its activity in 1921 as the Odontologic Faculty of the Kharkiv Medical Academy. In 1967 the Institute was transferred to the city of Poltava and renamed as the Poltava Medical Stomatological Institute, which in 1994 was granted the highest (IV) accreditation level and the status of the Poltava Medical Dental University. Its accreditation level IV was confirmed in 2004.

The forms of studies are full-time and part-time (evening form of studies). At the present at Poltava Medical Dental University, there are 3500 students studying today, including 729 international students from 39 different countries. There are General Medicine, Pediatrics, Pharmacy and Stomatological (Dentistry) Faculties, the Preparatory Faculty for international students training, the Postgraduate Faculty and the preparatory training course Department. A medical college, training bachelors and junior specialists, has been founded based on the Poltava Medical Dental University.

The scientific potential of the Poltava Medical Dental University is represented by 82 Doctors of Medical Science, 316 Candidates of Science, 75 Professors, 174 assistant professors, 2 winners of the Ukrainian State Prize, and 8 Honored Science and Technology workers of Ukraine, 6 Honored Physicians of Ukraine.
There have been a number of considerable changes at the Poltava Medical Dental University for the last decades having raised our higher institution on a new competitive level of specialist training and implemented the latest modern technologies of education. A great reputation of the Poltava Medical Dental University was confirmed by two Silver and one Bronze Medal received at the International Exhibition of Educational Institutions “Modern education in Ukraine- 2001, 2002, and 2004”. In June 2003 the Poltava Medical Dental University participated in the rating of the higher educational institutions of Ukraine “Sophia Kyivska”. For the active operation in increasing quality of modern education the Poltava Medical Dental University was rewarded a Diploma of Rating of Higher Educational institution. In the nomination “The Third Millennium Quality” the Academy was awarded a silver Medal and the Diploma of the International Academic Rating of popularity “Golden Fortune”.
From 1999 to 2007 the Academy published over 516 educational and methodical textbooks in various scientific spheres. 106 patents were obtained in Ukraine and in Russia last year. 7 scientific schools have been founded here which function nowadays: operative surgery; topographic anatomy; normal physiology; oral surgery; biological chemistry; pathological anatomy; conservative dentistry; clinical and experimental pharmacology.
Being a member of the UNO and UNESCO Ukraine takes an active part in fulfillment international programmes of high ducation. The Poltava Medical Dental University provides assistance to foreign states in training their national medical specialists. A Faculty for international students was founded in 1992 in order to improve the quality of Medical training for foreign citizens.
729 international students from 37 different countries including India,Pakistan,Malaysia,Nigeria,Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Kenya, Libya, Russia, Turkmenistan etc., study at the University today. They are guaranteed all the rights and freedoms stipulated by the current legislation of Ukraine. The training of foreign citizens is carried out in accordance with syllabuses and curriculum of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health Sciences of Ukraine (MHS). International and Ukrainian students have rights of equal access to lecture rooms, classrooms, reading halls and libraries, sports gyms. The students are also provided with some premises for organizing cultural, religious events and association meetings. The training process is provided by our scholars and educators who have a specialized education and rich experience in working with foreign citizens at the primary stages of their training. Having graduated from the Poltava Medical Dental University foreign students obtain an international standard Diploma.
In 1997 the Dean's Office organized a preparatory Department for international citizens. The students study Russian language, Science Language, the Basics of Maths, Physics, Biology, Informatics, and Ethnology. Overall, the work of the preparatory Department is aimed to adapt the foreign citizens to the lifestyle and training in Ukraine and introduce the culture and traditions of the Ukrainians. Further post diploma education is getting more and more popular among the postgraduates of the Poltava Medical Dental University. They study at the clinical postgraduate (residency) and postgraduate courses. 32 foreigner’s graduates of the medical and dental Faculties undertake residency at different chairs. More and more foreigners having completed the clinical postgraduate course would like to continue their studies at the postgraduates courses.

The Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy (UMSA) has 5 hostels with the total area of 36981 sq.m for accommodation of 3081 students.
The International Office of Ukrainian Medical Dental/Stomatological Academy (UMSA) provides a guarantee of accommodation placement services to all international students who receive an academic offer. There are several accommodation options for international students and it is important to consider whether you prefer an independent lifestyle or enjoy living in a community.
Combine the convenience of living on or near campus, access to programs and services to help you excel academically, the opportunity to build lasting friendships, and comfortable, affordable living and you have the life of a University. The territory of the University and the main students' routes from the hostels to the educational buildings are protected and patrolled by officers of guard service.
Rooms on campus are available to students. All hostel rooms are furnished and vary in size and number of conveniences. Dormitory rooms at Ukrainian Medical Dental/Stomatological Academy (UMSA) hostel can accommodate 2 or 3 students to a room.
All rooms are equipped with bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, heater, water heaters and suitable lighting for both study and relaxation. There are common areas where students can play and mingle. Upon the students arrival on campus, specific accommodations are assigned and after a satisfactory health report the student will be accommodated to the room which is allotted to him.
Off campus housing can be obtained in nearby apartments. Available apartments and houses are furnished, and vary in size, cost and number of conveniences. Life in Poltava is friendly and devoid rush. While at first some students may miss their home environment, native foods, or a hurried pace, they soon learn to appreciate and enjoy a cultural different their own.
In the hostel each room is attached with kitchen is provided for students to cook food to their own taste. Students will need to supply their own kitchen utensils. Meals may be bought from various food outlets. All the rooms are provided with heaters. Our hostels feature 24-hour access to security and emergency services, making it easy to get assistance when you need it. As a campus resident, you also have access to all the Ukrainian Medical Dental/Stomatological Academy (UMSA) support services such as campus Security Services, counselling Services and health Services.
In order to live comfortably while you are in Poltava, you will need to have about $USD 1200 per year available for living costs, above the cost of your tuition. The cost of living is cheaper than any other cities in the European countries. It is difficult to give a precise figure because of differences in the student lifestyle.
You will receive advice from financial advisers at the on how best to handle your money, but initially it is important to note that you should have some cash for immediate costs (e.g. airport costs or transport). You may have further funds in the form of travellers cheques which can be readily cashed. There are foreign exchange offices everywhere in Ukraine.
We strongly recommend that while in Ukraine you do not carry large amounts of cash on your person or leave cash in your room. We suggest opening a bank account as soon as possible after arrival. There are four banks with branches in the campus area. There are numerous automatic teller machines that dispense cash 24 hours a day.
Any major amounts of money may be sent in the form of a bank transfer, but electronic transfers are, in most cases, the most efficient method of sending funds to Ukraine. Payments can also be sent by western union and Money Gram.Overseas cheques are sometimes difficult to clear and are not recommended.
