Washington University in St. Louis (WashU, or WUSTL) is a private research university in Greater St. Louis with its main campus (Danforth) mostly in unincorporated St. Louis County, Missouri, and Clayton, Missouri. It also has a West Campus in Clayton, North Campus in the West End neighbourhood of St. Louis, Missouri, and Medical Campus in the Central West End neighbourhood of St. Louis, Missouri.

Founded in 1853 and named after George Washington, the university has students and faculty from all 50 U.S. states and more than 120 countries. Washington University is composed of seven graduate and undergraduate schools that encompass a broad range of academic fields. To prevent confusion over its location, the Board of Trustees added the phrase "in St. Louis" in 1976. Washington University is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".

As of 2020, 25 Nobel laureates in economics, physiology and medicine, chemistry, and physics have been affiliated with Washington University, ten having done the major part of their pioneering research at the university. In 2019, Clarivate Analytics ranked Washington University 7th in the world for most-cited researchers. The university also received the 4th highest amount of NIH medical research grants among medical schools in 2019.

The Washington University School of Medicine was founded in 1891. In the 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings of U.S. medical schools, it was ranked 6th for research and tied for 31st for primary care. The McDonnell Genome Institute (directed by Richard K. Wilson) is housed within the Washington University School of Medicine; it is one of three NIH-funded major DNA sequencing centres in the U.S. and played a significant role in the Human Genome Project. In 2019, the Washington University School of Medicine was the 4th medical school in the United States that received the most NIH funding.

The medical school partners with St. Louis Children's Hospital and Barnes-Jewish Hospital (part of BJC HealthCare), where all physicians are members of the school's faculty.

Wayman Crow and William Greenleaf Eliot Jr. led the establishment of Washington University in 1853. As its first step, the university started an evening program on Oct. 22, 1854. Since then, the university has dramatically grown into an institution that offers a host of liberal arts, scientific and classical courses. Currently, the university has seven academic divisions that focus on various fields of education. Higher Learning Commission has accredited the university. Washington University Medical Centre is sprawled across 164 acres and is situated in St. Louis' central west end. The West Campus has a conference centre, West Campus Library, and administrative offices. Located at 700 Rosedale Ave. in St. Louis, the North Campus is home to the university's various administrative offices. The South Campus encompasses athletic fields, an auditorium/theatre, a gymnasium, and some classroom amenities. Spread across 2,000 acres, Tyson Research Centre is situated 25 miles away from the Danforth Campus. It serves as an outdoor laboratory for research and learning.

Missouri

Missouri is a state in the Midwestern United States. With more than six million residents, it is the 18th-most populous state of the country. The largest urban areas are St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Columbia; the capital is Jefferson City. The state is the 21st-most extensive in area. Missouri is bordered by eight states (tied for the most with Tennessee): Iowa to the north, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee (via the Mississippi River) to the east, Arkansas to the south and Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska to the west. In the United States, a state is a constituent political entity, of which there are currently 50. Bound together in a political union, each state holds governmental jurisdiction over a separate and defined geographic territory and shares its sovereignty with the federal government. Due to this shared sovereignty, Americans are citizens both of the federal republic and of the state in which they reside. State citizenship and residency are flexible, and no government approval is required to move between states, except for persons restricted by certain types of court orders (such as paroled convicts and children of divorced spouses who are sharing custody).
