Vinnitsa medical university

Vinnitsa medical university was created in 1921. At the University work more than 500 teachers, including 90 doctors of science, professors, and 340 candidates of science.

Vinnitsa Medical Institute N.A. N.I. Paragon and since 1994 the University (VSMU) have been training competent doctors more 85 years. For this period about 43 thousands of specialists have been trained, who work in Ukraine and in many countries of the world.

The University have also trained more than 6,5 thousand of doctors from 93 countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, who have received at the University " Doctor of Medicine" diploma. They render medical aid to the population of their countries, work in higher educational medical establishments, head state and private medical establishments.

For years of existence VNMU became in Ukraine multi profile centre of training, specialization, improvement of medical, scientific-pedagogical staff with significant scientific-methodical, experimental work in all branches of medicine. In 1922 the first President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, academician D.K. Zabolotny has raised the question to the government bodies about the necessity of opening higher medical educational institution in Vinnitsa.

The predecessors of VNMU were Vinnitsa Pharmaceutical Institute (1921-1936), Vinnitsa branch of All-Ukrainian Institute of extra-mural medical education (1930), subsequently (1932) reorganized in the Evening industrial medical institute with two faculties - medical-preventive and pediatric.

Vinnitsa Medical Institute was created in 1934 on the basis of the Evening industrial medical institute. In 1960 by the Decree of Presidium of the Supreme Body of USSR the institute was given the name of N.I. Pirogov. In 1984 the institute was awarded the order "Budge of Honour" for success in training doctors and teaching staff, rendering assistance to practical public health services.

In 1994 Vinnitsa medical institute was accredited on IV (the highest) level, and its status was changed to university (Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 408, dated 15.06.94). From that time the institute was named Vinnitsa State Pirogov Memorial Medical University.

In the medium of medical circles of Ukraine, foreign countries VNMU is known by high quality of specialists' training, high requests to tutoring and exemplary organization of educational process. By expert inquiry under the international program "Rating of high schools", conducted by International Personnel Academy, VNMU is the only one among medical higher schools, which in 1995, 1997, 2000 was determined among higher state educational establishments of Ukraine as one of the best institutions, which prepares the most qualified specialists.

Under the totals of rating of 1997 and 2000 the University was also determined among the best educational medical establishments and was awarded with the special Diploma.

From year to year after the University's foundation improved its material base, created favorable conditions for tuition of the students, tutoring of the scientific-pedagogical personnel, constantly improving methodical-educational and research work.

The first intake of students in 1934 was conducted on medico- preventive (170 persons) and pediatric (195 persons) faculties. Institute was headed by A. F. Smolyanskaya.

The institute gradually was replenished with lecturers and great amount of students. In 1940 19 professors and 6 associated professors already had worked at 34 chairs of the institute. This year the fifth graduation of 197 doctors was held. In the fortieth the main building was constructed, in which all theoretical chairs, hostel on 1000 places were placed; the main clinical base of the institute - regional hospital named after N.I. Pirogov was enlarged. In 1941 the majority of the students and 150 graduates together with the teachers went to the fronts of the Second World War.

After liberation of Vinnytsya on March 20, 1944 the period of active restoring of institute began. In April, 1944, 472 students began to study at different faculties. In 1950 the necessary conditions for realization of full-bodied educational process on theoretical and clinical chairs were created at the institute. This year among 34 chairs 13 were headed by doctors of science and 19 by candidates of science. In 1958 restoration of main building was finished, the stadium and vivarium, hostel for 632 places were built. In 1969 2235 students were taught at two faculties of the institute (medical and paediatric), and the teaching process was conducted by 26 doctors of science, 106 candidates of science.

A lot of new had appeared in the institute in connection with election in 1988 as the rector V.M.Moroz, honoured scientist and technologist of Ukraine, doctor of medical science, professor. Being the graduate of Vinnitsa Medical Institute he has passed all administrative stages at the institute: the secretary of the scientific board, deputy of the dean, dean of the paediatric faculty, pro-rector on teaching and educational work. The talent of V.M. Moroz as organizer, scientist, tutor and chief almost of seven-thousand university's personnel is directed on improving of quality of preparation of specialists, introduction of new educational technologies, modernizing and creation of modern educational base, active use of management and marketing requests pertaining the improvement of tuition conditions and social defence of the students and teachers.

In 1994 the faculty of Dentistry was organized and up-to-date equipped, in 2000 the education at the faculty of Pharmacy began. During the last years the educational buildings were repaired, the main part of the new educational building was put into operation, the computerization of the university's chairs was conducted, contacts between chairs of the university and establishments of practical public health were extended. The centre of new information technologies and the scientific-research centre were opened.

Now training of specialists is carried out at 53 chairs, where the competent scientific-pedagogical staff works. Among them 93 doctors of science, professors, 17 academicians and 5 members- correspondents of Academies of Science, 421 candidates of science, associated professors. 7 lecturers have honorary title of the Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine and honoured workers of higher school. Some of research workers of the University are the laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine.

In 2004 the International links department for recruitment of international students and extension of international collaboration in different spheres of the University's activity was organized.

The University has traditions in educational, research activity, organization of the students' leisure, maintaining of heartily relations with the graduates.

Among the graduates of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya there are rectors of universities (academician V.N. Kazakov, academician V.M.Moroz, professor V.D. Bilyk, associated professor M.P. Rudyuk), director of Scientific-Research Institute (academician Y.A. Zozulya, Institute of Neurosurgery, vice-president of Ukrainian Academy of Medical Science), former deputy minister of public health (professor A.N. Zelinskiy), head expert of the ministry of public health (professor A.I. Treshchinskiy, anesthesiology and intensive care).

During the University studies the students undergo practice/practical in clinical skills on the basis of 47 the best medical establishments of Vinnitsa, Zhitomir, Khmelnitsky regions.

The university has 5 hostels, 4 canteens, 7 buffets, sports complex, preventive health centre, sanitary-sports bases on the shores of the Black Sea and the Southern Bug river.

Since 1977 the university trains foreign citizens. Being the state educational institution, National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnitsa in its activity is guided by the Constitution of Ukraine, Law of Ukraine "About Higher Education", other acts of Ukrainian legislation, Regulations of the University. The education of the foreign citizens is regulated by the law of Ukraine "About the Legal Status of the Foreigners and Stateless Persons" and the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine 1 36 (26.02.1993) "About Education of the Foreign Citizens in Ukraine" and the Regulations of VNMU, with the normative documents regulating educational process, it is possible to acquaint oneself at the dean's office for foreign students.

Brief description of Vinnitsa city

Vinnitsa is the administrative, economic, regional centre of Ukraine. The city is located on the banks of the river Pivdennyy Bug, 260 km to the south of the capital of Ukraine Kiev (3 hours by train), 14 hours by train from Moscow and 6 - from Odessa and from Lviv).The city is connected by the railway and air paths to the Western Europe and other countries. Average temperature in winter is 5 -7°C below zero, summer - 20 +27°C above zero. Vinnitsa is known as students' city of Ukraine, it is proud of such outstanding educational institutions as: Vinnitsa National Medical University, Vinnitsa National Technical University, Vinnitsa State Pedagogical University, Vinnitsa Trade and Economic Institute of Kyiv National Trade and Economic University, Vinnitsa State Agricultural University.

Living conditions

The University has 5 hostels, 4 canteens, 7 buffets. During the period of studies at the university, a place in a room at the student's hostel equipped with furniture, appropriate maintenance service, kitchens, shower rooms and other places of common use are provided for the extra charge. In the hostels the permitting regime functions and the appropriate protection is ensured.

For US $ 25-40 per month a place in the luxurious hostel room equipped with TV set, telephone, and refrigerator is provided.

Health services

Medical aid is provided to the foreign citizens on the basis of the medical insurance policy.

The key medical services are given in the out-patient unit of the University. At the preventive health centre of the university, medical assistance and proper diet food is supplied. Free medical consultation by the professors of various specialized departments of the university is available.

On signing the contract of studies with the university, the medical insurance policy is made, which ensures assistance in the medical establishments of our city and Ukraine. It is renewed each academic year.
