Sichuan University

Sichuan University is a public research university in Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Sichuan University is directed by the Ministry of Education. One of the top universities of China, it is a member of various education projects aiming at developing elite universities, including the Project 211, the Project 985 and the Double First Class University Plan.[3]

Sichuan University results from the merger of three institutions in 1994: the former Sichuan University, the Chengdu University of Science and Technology (CUST) and the West China University of Medical Sciences (WCUMS).

Sichuan University is one of the earliest institutions of higher education in China. Its earliest predecessor was the Sichuan Chinese and Western School, a school established in 1896 that combined traditional and modern methods of education. In 1902, it was merged with two traditional Chinese academies, the Jinjiang Shuyuan and the Zunjing Shuyuan , and became known as the Sichuan Higher School . In 1916, after another merger with a normal school, it was renamed the National Chengdu Higher Normal School . In the late 1920s, the institution was briefly divided into three universities, namely the National Chengdu University, the Chengdu Normal University and the Public Sichuan University. In 1931, however, they were reintegrated to form the National Sichuan University. By 1949, the National Sichuan University had been developed into one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in China, with arts, science, engineering, agriculture, law, and normal schools and a total of 25 departments.

After the foundation of the PRC, the name was changed to Sichuan University. In the 1950s, the national "adjustment of colleges and departments" was organized, after which SCU specialized in arts and science. The schools of engineering and agriculture was mostly split off to form two new universities: the Chengdu Institute of Technology and the Sichuan Institute of Agriculture. The normal school was merged into Southwest Normal University and Sichuan Teachers College. The school of law became part of the Southwest College of Political Science and Law. A number of departments in agriculture was transferred to the Southwest Institute of Agriculture, while the department of aeronautics was affiliated under the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics the north gate of Wangjiang Campus of SCU, taken on 17, Oct 2015

The Chengdu Institute of Technology, established in 1954, specialized in chemical engineering, hydroelectricity, mechanics, textiles, and light industry. In 1978, it was renamed to Chengdu University of Science and Technology (CUST).

The West China School of Medicine was originally founded as a private medical school, known as West China Union College . It became a public university after the foundation of the PRC, being renamed to Sichuan Medical College in 1953 and West China University of Medical Science (WCUMS) in 1985. It was established in 1910 by five Christian missionary groups from the U.S., UK and Canada, with offered courses in stomatology, biomedicine, basic medicine and clinical medicine. By the 1990s, It had become one of the most reputable Chinese medical institutions at home and abroad.

In 1994, the SCU, CUST and WCUMS merged to form the Sichuan Union University

The university adopted the current name in 1998.

Today, Sichuan University is the largest and most comprehensive university in Western China. SCU grants doctorates in twelve main disciplines and 111 subordinate disciplines. It also has six professional degree programs, and has 16 disciplines for postdoctoral research. The 109 bachelor's degree programs SCU grants cover the main fields in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, medicine and agriculture. Its current student population is more than 70,000.

Sichuan University Scholarships

University recruits 120-160 students for scholarships every year. Scholarships for Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degree as well as for language courses are provided. Academic Performance

The SCU has a huge scientific potential because it has two national laboratories, which are well equipped, six science centers of technical engineering, five government laboratories, which are promoted by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. Apart from that, there are thirty-five regional laboratories, ten research centers of ministries. During its existence, the High education establishment has done a large quantity of national and regional research projects, which have to be a success. That is to say, they have reached plenty of achievements that are highly appreciated by the country’s leadership and recognized by the people of China.

The Administration of the High education establishment created favorable conditions for a comfortable acquisition of knowledge. The higher school’s library, namely, its three divisions include about four million eight hundred thousand volumes, they are considered as the Centre for collecting English publications within the National Educational, different kinds of cultural Organization. The library is such kind of the information center of the Ministry of Emergencies on the literature of liberal arts and the sub-center of SALIS South-West.

The Sichuan University’s Museum is a unique scientific facility where every scientific researcher or student will have access to a one-of-a-kind site that contains an extensive collection of cultural relics of over four thousand pieces, and animal and plant samples – over six hundred thousand pieces, ranking first in Its holdings are among others in China.

Sichuan University Admission

Introduction

Sichuan University currently offers 133 undergraduate programs to international students. The undergraduate programs are 4 years except architecture and medical programs which require 5 years. The teaching language is Chinese with some courses bilingually in Chinese and English. Bachelor’s degree and graduation certificate are awarded to those who finish all the course work required and pass thesis defense.

Eligibility

• Foreign citizens under age 25 and in good health
• Certificate of Graduation from senior high school
• HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Report Level 6 or above

The qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS). The scholarship application should be directed to the Chinese Embassy or Consulates in the applicant’s home country. The application is accepted from early January to early April each year.

• Certificate of HSK Level 5 or the notarized photocopy
• Certificate of expected graduation certificate issued by senior high school (for applicants who will be graduating from senior high school in July)
• Three copies of applicant’s recent photo (cap-free, 2-inch size)
• Two Letters of Recommendation from senior high school/institution
• A photocopy of passport (pages with photo, visa or residence permit)
• For applicants who are studying at a university, additional materials are required:schooling transcript, student status letter and recommendation from the university
• Supplementary materials upon request.

Review and Admission

The application materials will be reviewed and examined by the Foreign Students Affairs Office and the Admission Committee of the department concerned. Once approved, the Admission Notice from Sichuan University and Visa Application Form for Foreigners (JW202/JW201) will be issued in early January for spring program or early July for autumn program. The applicants may inquire for admission status via the On-line Application System on the website of International Visa Application and Admission Registration

The admitted students should bring their Passport, Admission Notice from Sichuan University, Visa Application Form (JW202/JW201), and Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners as well as Blood Test Record to the Embassy or Consulate of the People’s Republic of China in the nearest city of their home country to apply for a student visa (X visa). In early September the students shall come to International Student Office Sichuan University for admission registration before the deadline indicated on the Admission Notice. The X visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arriving in China.
