Siberian State University (SibMed) is located in the region of Tomsk, Russia. It was founded in May, 1888 with the decree of the emperor Alexander II. It is a part of the top 3 best medicine universities’ list in Russia. It is the only university to get the status of being the flagship university. The university has faculty who are adept in teaching. Along with one other university SibMeD got the opportunity to work with the government of the Russian Federation on the project planned to increase education exports in the country.

The university was formerly known as the Siberian State University which was opened as the 9th university in Russia in late nineteenth century. In the early 1990s the Tomsk state medical institute was formed with the merger of two faculties that were the faculty of medicine and the faculty of sanitation and hygiene. It played a major role during World War II in providing health care and medical assistance to soldiers. Students, staff and the citizenry were actively working in the university hospital which had about 700 beds that time. The university has 40 departments, 2 faculties and 17 clinics.

In 1992 the Tomsk State Medical University became the first-ever institute to receive the status of a university by the government and became the Siberian State Medical University.
