In the early 1990s the Tomsk state medical institute was formed with the merger of two faculties that were the faculty of medicine and the faculty of sanitation and hygiene. It played a major role during World War II in providing health care and medical assistance to soldiers. Students, staff and the citizenry were actively working in the university hospital which had about 700 beds that time. The university has 40 departments, 2 faculties and 17 clinics.
In 1992 the Tomsk State Medical University became the first-ever institute to receive the status of a university by the government and became the Siberian State Medical University.

Siberian state medical university doesnt provide accommodation to every student. It is based on whether the course is a long-term or a short-term one.
