The Heidelberg University known as the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg is a public university. It is situated I Heidelberg, Bade- Wurttemberg, Germany. Heidelberg University is one of the oldest running university in the world and the oldest functioning institution in Germany. It is founded in 1386. It was established on the instructions of Pope Urban VI and is the third university established in the Holy Roman Empire.

Rupert, I initiated the talks with Curia, which led to Papal Bull for the foundation of the university. The final decision to found the university was taken on 26 June 1386, at the behest of Rupert I, Count Palatine of the Rhine. Initially, the university included four faculties, philosophy, theology, jurisprudence and medicine.
In 1386, on 19 October the first lecture was held, making Heidelberg the ancientest university in Germany.
Marsilius of Inghen was elected as the first rector of the university, and stated the duty with the motto, “ The book of learning is always open”.
In 1518, Martin Luther king’s disputation made a long-lasting impact which attracted a large number of scholars and masters and to the reformation of the university in Southwest Germany.
In 1803, the university was re-established as the country owned institution by Karl Friedrich, Grand of Duke Baden.
In 1900, the Grand Duchy of Baden issued a decree that empowered women the right to access universities. Thus the Heidelberg University was the first one to allow women to study.
With the advent of the third Reign, in 1933, university supported Adolf Hitler and Nazi, as a result, it dismissed a large number of staff and professors and students for racial and political reasons.
The university has its museum, which is situated in the main building of the old campus.

Fee Structure. A fee of 171.75 euros is charged for studying at the University of Heidelberg (special tuition fees are charged for continuing education and existing non-consecutive Master's programs). The amount is due at the beginning of each semester upon re-registration or must be paid as part of matriculation.
