Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (abbreviated DMCH) is a public medical college and hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital city. On one campus, there is a medical school as well as a tertiary care hospital. Due to India's partition in 1946, all advanced students (from K-4 to K-1) as well as many lecturers and professors were transferred from Calcutta Medical College to the newly established Dhaka Medical College to begin academic studies and maintain hospital facilities. Academic classes began on July 10, which is also known as DMC Day. The first principal was Major W. J. Virgin, the chairman of the committee formed to establish the Dhaka Medical College. There were only four departments at first: medicine, surgery, gynecology, and otolaryngology.
This historic institution has produced over 10000 doctors who have played significant roles in society. From 1948 to 1952, the Dhaka Medical College dormitory (known as Barrack) was the epicenter of the language movement. This Medical College's students give their lives for the Language movement. The Shaheed Minar was established within the DMCH compound, which was later separated. During the Liberation War in 1971, many of this institution's students and doctors were directly and indirectly involved in the conflict.Dhaka Medical College began with a single building and has since grown to include a college building with a new extension, an auditorium, a Nuclear Medicine Centre, male and female dormitories, burn units, and other facilities spread across approximately 25 acres of land.234 doctors, 140 interns, 560 nurses, and 1100 other staff members work in 34 different departments and 42 wards to provide 24-hour health services both indoors and outdoors. The hospital now has approximately 2300 beds and a new academic and hospital building with a bone marrow transplantation facility, serving nearly 3500 inpatients every day.
