The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Chapel Hill,
or simply Carolina is a public research university in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The flagship of
the University of North Carolina system, it is considered to be a Public Ivy, or a public
institution which offers an academic experience equivalent to an Ivy League university After being
chartered in 1789, the university first began enrolling students in 1795, making it one of the
oldest public universities in the United States. Among the claimants, the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill is the only one to have held classes and graduated students as a public

The first public institution of higher education in North Carolina, the school opened its doors to
students on February 12, 1795. North Carolina became coeducational under the leadership of
President Kemp Plummer Battle in 1877 and began the process of desegregation under Chancellor
Robert Burton House when African-American graduate students were admitted in 1951. In 1952, North
Carolina opened its own hospital, UNC Health Care, for research and treatment, and has since
specialized in cancer care through UNC's Line Berger Comprehensive Cancer Center which is one of
only 51 national NCI designated comprehensive centres.
The university offers degrees in over 70 courses of study and is administratively divided into 13
separate professional schools and a primary unit, the College of Arts & Sciences Five of the
schools have been named: the UNC Kenan–Flagler Business School, the UNC Hussman School of
Journalism and Media, the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, the UNC Eshelman School of
Pharmacy, and the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. All undergraduates receive a liberal arts
education and have the option to pursue a major within the professional schools of the university

After submitting your application to NC State, you should receive an email with
information regarding your applicant portal, wolf PAW, in the next 14 days. Your wolf PAW
account is where you can view your application status, missing items and your final
admissions decision.
HOW DO I FIND MY TRANSFER CREDIT REPORT?
Transfer students who are admitted will be able to view a preliminary transfer credit
report on My Pack Portal. Some of your courses may still be under review, but you are able
to see a preliminary report to view how your credits will transfer.
WHERE CAN I FIND MY RCN?
You can find your RCN on your Residency Determination Service of North Carolina (RDS)
account.
DOES RESIDENCY AFFECT APPLICATION REVIEW?
As a member institution of the UNC System, only 18% of NC State’s enrolling first-year
class can be from outside of North Carolina. Due to the current quantity of out-of-state
applications we receive, residency does not impact admissions decisions. Residency is only
used for tuition purposes for enrolled students
ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT THE SAT OR ACT?
Submitting SAT or ACT test scores is optional for international students. However, if
international students choose to submit SAT or ACT test scores, the scores must be sent
directly from the testing agency.
International students who live outside the U.S. or who have NOT attended a U.S. high
school since grade 9 are required to submit one of the following scores for proof of
English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test. The
test scores must be sent directly from the test agency.

WHAT SHOULD I CHOOSE AS MY SECOND CHOICE MAJOR?
On the application, first-year applicants are asked to select a first and second choice
major for review. It is not required for you to choose a second choice major, but it is
encouraged. For your second choice major, you are encouraged to choose any major you are
interested in pursuing considering there is a possibility that you may be admitted into
your second choice major if you are not considered competitive for your first choice major
