Jimma University is a public research university located in Jimma, Oromia, Ethiopia. Jimma
university is recognized as the leading national university, Jimma university ranked first by the
Federal Ministry of Education for four successive years (2009 - 2012). The establishment of Jimma
university dates back to 1952 when Jimma college of Agriculture was founded. The Jimma university
got its current name in December 1999 following the amalgamation of Jimma College of Agriculture
founded in 1952 and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences founded in 1983. The Jimma university is
located in the city of Jimma, situated around 352 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa. Jimma
university’s grounds cover some 167 hectares. Jimma university is Ethiopia's first innovative
community-oriented educational institution of higher learning, with teaching centers for health
care students in Jimma university, Omo Nada, Shebe, Agaro, and Asendabo. Jimma university is a
pioneer in Public health training. Jimma university has academic and scientific collaboration with
numerous national and international partners. Jimma university also publishes the biannual
Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences, and launched the Jimma University Journal of Law in October
2007. Jimma University is one of the largest and comprehensive public research universities in
Africa. The Jimma University has more than 4,000 faculty and staff members. Jimma university also
has twelve research facilities, a modern hospital, a community school, a community radio station FM
102.0, an ICT center, libraries and revenue generating enterprises. The Jimma university is
operating on four campuses and Jimma university is on the phase of establishing its fifth campus at
Agaro. Currently, the Jimma university educates more than 43,000 students in 56 undergraduate and
103 postgraduate programs in regular, summer and distance education with more enrollments in the
years to come. The Jimma university has many national and international linkages and collaborations
in the area of research, education and community service. Jimma universitys innovative educational
philosophy, staff commitment and motivation and availability of better research facility have
helped the Jimma university in attracting both national and international partners. Jimma

Throughout its history, the Jimma university has been committed to this scheme, and almost all of
the academic curriculum are based on CBE programs. Jimma University is the first university in
Africa that has established an exclusive office under the President's office to supervise all
innovative programs across the Jimma university.
Jimma university admission:
Admission requirement for the master’s program;
- A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 or higher from any recognized college of higher
learning. However, given the availability of spaces admission to the School of Graduate Studies
shall be on competitive basis for Jimma university admission.
- The candidate must be supported by at least two letters of recommendation from appropriate body
or colleges. Such letters of recommendation should preferably come from instructors or employers
who are well acquainted with the applicant’s ability to cope up with the requirements of
graduate study s/he applies for the admission of Jimma university.
- Graduate students shall present evidence of financial support/ability to defray costs of
tuition and research project. Any graduate student shall not, in any case, be allowed to
register and start attending classes without presenting this evidence to taking admission in
Jimma university.
- Admission at Jimma university shall take place three times in a year for the spring semester
beginning in January, for the fall Semester beginning on September and summer semester beginning
in July.
- Age, anyone who wants to join the graduate program can apply. For pedagogical reasons or
special requirements of field of study, the College Academic Commission may set appropriate age
limits subject to the approval of the Council of Graduate Studies. However, the maximum age
limits an applicant to be admitted to the master’s program shall not exceed 35 years and for PhD
program 45 years to taking admission at Jimma university.
- A candidate to be admitted at the Jimma university to the graduate program shall pass the Post
Graduate entrance exam and/or other specific requirements that may be set by the respective
department and the Council of Graduate Studies.
Admission requirement for general admission;
- A candidate who has a high scholastic standing, whose professional experience has been superior
and who has received good recommendations shall be given priority for admission.
- A minimum of ten students should be admitted in any one year in order to run a graduate program
in a department of the University except in the clinical disciplines where even less than 10
students can be enrolled as it has service component. However, the optimum number of students in
the different programs shall be determined by the respective DGC taking into consideration the
number of staff, availability of space and demand for training.
- The SGS may, from time to time; include additional admission requirements in conformity with
university's rules and regulations. These may be of general application or may pertain to
specific programs of graduate studies.

What is the Application process and the cost of tuition?
The admission process is based on the certificate of previous education provided by the
applicant and academic performance. Upon review about(80%) of applicants receive a
positive response. The university offers online degree programs. This format proved to be
quite popular among the students.
Are there students in JU from abroad?
JU currently employs 120 international faculty constituting 8 % of its academic staff
members. They are mostly from India, Philippines, Cuba, Nigeria, Kenya, China, South
Korea, Canada the USA and others. The university further aspires to attract world class
teaching and research staff to add more global experiences in its teaching and research
endeavors. The number of international students is close to 70 and most of them are full
time degree seeking students at BSc, MSc and PHD level coming from South Sudan, Ghana,
Rwanda, Benin, Nigeria, Namibia and others. Even though the number of international
students is small compared to the aggregate number of Ethiopian students, the university
is growing rapidly and the demand to attract more international students is rising over
time as internationalization is emphasized as the pillar strategic direction of the
