Founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University (TJU) is the first university in China. Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health;
  2. Requirements for applicants’ degree and age:
    Applicant applying for a PhD degree should hold a Master diploma and be under the age of 40.
  3. Language Proficiency requirements:
    Chinese-taught programs applicants need to submit HSK certificates. A minimum requirement of HSK4 (Score 195 or above) for Engineering/Science; HSK5 (Score 180 or above) for business and liberal arts is needed.
    English-taught programs applicants need to submit English proficiency certificate. TOEFL: no less than 80, IELTS: no less than 6.0. (Native English speakers are exempted)
  4. Applicants should have good conduct, good physical and mental health, and be willing to abide by the laws and regulations of China and Tianjin University.

  1. Scan of notarized highest diploma. (Scan of pre-graduation certificate is required if the applicants have not gained certificate. Please present the original highest diploma and notarized copy of highest diploma before registration).

  4. Applicants who are not in China at present must submit scan of Certificate of Non-Criminal Records or students conduct certificate.
  5. Applicants who are now in China must submit scan of Photocopy of Visa and Transfer Certificate from present school.
  6. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form(The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Please select the appropriate time to have medical examination as the result is valid only for 6 months).
  7. Applicants used to be Chinese citizens but later immigrated to other countries who have meet the conditions set by the Document No.83 (2009) of Ministry of Education of the PRC should submit citizenship certificate and 4-year visa record.
  8. A Study or Research Plan
    All applicants must submit a study or research plan for the study in China, with no less than 800 words in English or Chinese.
  9. Two Recommendation Letters
    Applicant applying for a PhD degree needs to provide two recommendation letters by professors in Chinese or English.
  10. Form of Provisional Acceptance of International Student by TJU Professor
    Applicant should contact the TJU professors to finish the acceptance form(Strongly recommended)
    If you cannot get an acceptance on your own, admission office of TJU will deliver application materials to the college to find a supervisor for you.
  11. Self-introduction Video
    Applicant needs to submit a 5-minute self-introduction video in Chinese or English.
    Applicants are required to submit scanned images of all required documents at the time of application. All uploaded documents should be in Chinese or in English; otherwise notarial translations in Chinese or English are required. Once translated, the original documents and certified translations are to be submitted together to the application system.

Tianjin University will announce the admission result officially on website, and post Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202) to scholarship winners from July 1 to July 31.

Tianjin university admission procedure

Applicants should complete an Online Application on our website(tju.at0086.cn/student)according to the application schedule. Applicants should fill in the application information online, upload the application documents listed below to the Online Application System.

  1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. For applicants who used to be Chinese citizens but later immigrated to other countries, the Document No.83 (2009) of Ministry of Education of the PRC shall apply.
  2. A Master’s Degree program applicant should hold a Bachelor diploma and be under the age of 35.
    A Doctoral Degree program applicant should hold a Master diploma and be under the age of 40. Applicants shall be of good moral character, physically and mentally healthy, and willing to comply with Chinese laws and the regulations of Tianjin University.
  3. Language Proficiency requirements:
    Chinese-taught programs applicants need to submit HSK certificates. A minimum requirement of HSK4 (Score 195 or above) for Engineering/Science; HSK5 (Score 180 or above) for business and liberal arts is needed.

Evaluation and Admission

TJU enrolls students based on evaluation of applicants’ academic record, language proficiency and interview performance. The admission committee of the applicable department/school will review the application documents and select applicants for further interview. Interview date will be announced afterwards, please pay attention to the mailbox for the announcement. The final admission decision will be made after the interview.

Before the final admission result is released, applicants may check their admission status via the TJU online Application System. TJU will issue Admission notice and Visa documents to those admitted.

Tianjin university notable alumni

In 1895, Sheng Xuanhuai submitted his memorial to the Guangxu Emperor to request for approval to set up a modern higher education institution in Tianjin. After approval on October 2, 1895, Peiyang Western Study College was founded by him and American educator Charles Daniel Tenney and later developed to Peiyang University.

It was the first university providing four year degree modern higher education in China. The university modeled itself on the famous American Universities and aimed to rejuvenate China by training qualified personnel with new scientific and technological knowledge. After the PR China's foundation and university restructures, Peiyang University was renamed Tianjin University in 1951.

How is the living standard in Tianjin city? What about the canteen in the University?

The living cost here is reasonable, for example, around 150 USD for your food cost per month. There are 6 canteens around the dormitories on campus of Tianjin University. The cuisine in the Liuyuanp Restaurant, located near the International Student Dormitory, is ideal for international students.

How can I arrive in Tianjin city, the location of University?

If there is no direct flight to Tianjin, the recommended route is to fly to Beijing and take taxi or the direct bus to Tianjin (around 2.5 hours) just inside Beijing Capital International Airport.

Can you send a vehicle to take us from the local airport to the University?

Tianjin University offers international students Airport Pick-up service from Tianjin Binhai International Airport or Beijing Capital International Airport to the campus. It is approximately 50 minutes from Tianjin Binhai International Airport to Tianjin University, around 2.5 hours from Beijing Capital International Airport to the university. But international students should book in advance and send detailed departure, transfer and arrival schedule to us in advance so that the university can pick up without any delay.
