Sun Yat-sen University originally known as Guangdong University is a public university located in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, an area neighboring Hong Kong and Macao and the most economically developed province in China. The university was founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a great democratic revolutionary leader of the 20th century a Chinese revolutionary, first president and founding father of the Republic of China. The university is one of the leading universities in the People's Republic of China which is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university. Reputed as "the top university in south China", Sun Yat-sen University is one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China. The university provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technology, medical science, pharmacology and managerial science.
Present-day Sun Yat-sen University is the result of multiple mergers as well as splits and restructurings that have involved more than a dozen academic institutions over time. The most recent merger happened in 2001, when Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science merged with Sun Yat-sen University and became Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Science. The university also has the largest affiliated hospital system in China.
One of the predecessors of the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science was the Bo Ji Medical School, which, founded in 1866, was the earliest institution of learning of western medicine in China, where Dr. Sun Yat-sen once studied and engaged in revolutionary activities. The Bo Ji Medical School evolved into the College of Medicine of Lingnan University in 1936. The Kung Yee Medical School and Hospital in Guangzhou, China was founded in 1908. In 1925, the Kung Yee institutions were taken over by the government and became the Medical Department of the National First Sun Yat-sen University. In 1953, the Colleges of Medicine in Sun Yat-sen University and Lingnan University merged to form the College of Medicine of South China, which was joined by the Guangdong Guanghua College of Medicine in 1954. The university was renamed Guangzhou College of Medicine and Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Science successively, and finally Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science in 1985, which has developed steadfastly into a comprehensive medical university with multi-schools and multiple levels, has reached national advanced level and achieved remarkable successes in scientific research in medical genetics, ophthalmology, tumor study, parasite study, the kidney disease of internal medicine, organ transplant, infectious liver disease, biological medical project and molecular medical science. In 2001, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science merged with Sun Yat-sen University and became Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Science.
At present, the university covers a total area of 6.17 square kilometers and has 4 campuses: Guangzhou South Campus, Guangzhou North Campus, Guangzhou East Campus, and Zhuhai Campus.
The university also has the largest affiliated hospital system in China. The university is ranked as one of the top universities in China by all the three most influential and widely observed international university rankings.

The university's system of libraries is one of the largest in China. The Library is the Center of China Academic Library & Information System of South China, the Base of CALIS Digital Library, the Center of China Academic Social Sciences & Humanities Library of South China, one of the 16 Literature Information Centers of Chinese Ministry of Education, the Arts Special Funds beneficiary and the Sci-Tech Novelty Search Workstation of Chinese Ministry of Education.
There are two International Student Dormitory buildings on the Guangzhou South Campus and one building on the Guangzhou North Campus. This Building is located in the South Campus' Eastern District-the Chinese student’s residential district. It is very convenient to live there - students canteens, shops, bookstores, sports facilities and swimming pools are all within easy reach. Living with the Chinese students in the same district, you will interact and make friends with them and gain an insight of the lively campus life. The Building is an 8-floor one without elevator. Each room includes a bathroom and a balcony. Two students share one room. The room is equipped with an air conditioner, an electric fan, a telephone set, two beds, two desks, two bookshelves, and two internet connection plugs. On the first floor of the Building, there is the public laundry room, reading room and a TV room.
