Odessa State Medical University is one of the biggest higher medical universities, a member of European and International Association of Universities, the leader of reformation of medical education in the country.

The institution was started in 1900 as the Medical Faculty of the Novorossiysk State University in Odessa. The medical faculty soon became one of the most prestigious medical faculties in the Russian Empire. Many famous medical scientists including Nobel laureates like Professor Mechnikov worked here.

Today the Odessa National Medical University remains one of the leading medical universities in Ukraine. It is a member of the International Association of Medical Universities and the high standards of training at the institution is well recognized throughout Europe and America. The University consists of 58 faculties and has a student population of over 6,000 including foreign students from very different and diverse countries. Tuition is given in Russian, Ukrainian and English languages.

Campuses and buildings

There are 43 clinical departments in the university, located at 63 medical and prophylactic institutions in Odessa and Odessa region. All the departments of the university have their own Internet site. The site contains all essential methodological materials on all the disciplines in the Ukrainian, Russian and English. An electronic catalog of the whole fund of books and journals (over 700 thousand titles) as well as an electronic fund of the course books has been created at the university library. An on-line access to electronic resources has Odessa State Medical University been provided. A Center of Distance Education has been created for effective and uninterrupted professional development of doctors and pharmaceutics. The university has created all the conditions necessary for active students leisure. There are six sports halls at the university sport complex: for sports games, table tennis, aerobics and rhythmic gymnastics, shaping-up, gym and track-and-field hall. There are several sport groups: athletics, basketball, handball, tennis, power-lifting, weight sports, swimming, fencing, indoor soccer, judo, sambo, and chess. Hostels provide students with sports grounds and gyms. The students’ sports and fitness complex is situated on the territory of Lustdorf at the Black Sea coast. There also exists the center of students’ creative work which is called VITA” at the university. Thirty creative groups of different genres function actively in this center (the vocal studio Harmony”, the band of modern and variety dancing “Exprompt, the band of folk singing and dancing, etc.) and unite about 250 students. 2500 students live in 5 hostels.

Odessa State Medical University is the first university of Ukraine which started medical education in English medium in 1996. In 2005, OSMU was awarded with a medal for the development of modern model for teaching the English speaking students by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Odessa State Medical University is an higher education institution of the IV (the top level) accreditation level conferred by the State Accreditation Committee of Ukraine (Record No. 12 of June 30, 1994). The University trains specialists of the following qualification levels: Junior Specialist, Specialist, Master (Foreign students included) for the following specialties:

Foreign Students

Foreign students have been studying since 1946. Over 6000 students from Europe, Asia, Africa, and America have got education from this university and are working successfully as doctors in 87 countries of the world. 240 have done specialization and 109 super specializations from OSMU.

The studies are carried out by 800 teachers, 18 academicians, 105 professors and doctors of Medical Science, 407 docents and candidates of medical science. During the course students master all modern medical technologies which are available today in the world.

The university has 18 blocks with general area of 20,000 sq.m., 6 hostels (Fully furnished with all essential facilities), a library with total stock of 1 million books, publishing-printing complex, scientific medical computer center, Students Polyclinic providing medical aid to students free of cost, 3 Museums (Historical Museum, Anatomic Museum & The Museum of Pathological Anatomy), sport complex with indoor & outdoor sports facilities, Students' Club/Cultural and Scientific Societies, modern recreation centers on the coast of Black Sea where up to 500 students can rest at a time.

Accommodation

OSMU has six hostels. Hostels are provided with:

  • Free 24 hrs. Gas, electricity, hot & cold water and phone.
  • Rooms are centrally heated.
  • Furniture and bedding in rooms is provided by the hostel.
  • Reading rooms and gym are also available in every hostel.
  • Hostels are provided with full security.
  • Student Cafeteria.
  • Hostels are surrounded by green belt with outdoor sport activities like basketball, volleyball, football, etc.
